JCREMC Subsidiary, JCFiber, to Help Close Digital Divide in Service Territory
At JCFiber, we are committed to providing underserved members with the absolute best Internet connectivity by bringing high-speed, fiber-optic service. In 2020, we added 600 residential consumers and several businesses to our network; soon, we will add even more.
In December of 2020, the Board took action to expand JCFiber’s high-speed, fiber-optic Internet network to reach an additional 5,000 JCREMC members over the next four years. We recognize the importance of high-speed Internet connectivity to JCREMC members and that current high-speed Internet providers are not prioritizing rural areas. “It’s time to bridge the digital divide separating rural and urban America, and JCFiber is focused on bringing the absolute best technology available to our members in underserved areas,” says John W. Sturm, President of JCFiber and JCREMC’s Chief Executive Officer.
JCFiber has identified underserved areas in JCREMC’s service territory and has already begun rolling out high-speed broadband to underserved residents as shown in the maps below. The area currently under construction includes approximately 360 households and is located on the west side of the territory near Banta, Crooked Creek, and Paradise Lakes. These residents will be able to begin signing up for service within the next few weeks, and we expect to have the first round of home installations completed by summer. Main line construction will begin this summer in the southwest corner of Johnson County covering most of Hensley Township and part of Nineveh Township, from Peoga Rd. to the Johnson/Morgan county line. Approximately 1,100 residents are included in this area, and we hope to complete the initial round of these installations by early 2022.
As the JCFiber network is expanded, eligible businesses and residents in all newly served areas are notified of service availability. Plans for the remainder of the service territory are being developed and will likely include four additional construction phases. We expect to announce the next phase sometime this summer.
